It is worrisome that the central theme of the Christian message (love) is highly misunderstood and distorted today.
A young lady once said to me: “Father, why is everyone against me for expressing love? Is that not what God wants from us? As I inquired to know why her act of love was rejected, she said: “I am in love with a woman and she loves me too, but everyone is against our relationship.” For a second I was speechless not knowing what to say, but she continued: “Those criticising me say it is wrong and evil. But father”, she added “what is more evil than a mother abandoning her own children. My mother abandoned me and my siblings. Now I found a woman who loves me and takes care of me. We love each other and are in a relationship. Please show me the evil here, I need to be convinced.” If you were in my shoes, what response would you give to her?
Today, the central message is love. The evil one knows it is the central Christian message and to mislead many, invented its own version that resembles true love. John 15:9-17
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my own joy may be in you and your joy be complete. This is my commandment: love one another, as I have loved you. A man can have no greater love than to lay down his life for his friends.
POINTS FOR REFLECTION
1. It is true the bible tells us to ‘love God and love your neighbour as yourself’ (Mk 12:30-31), but not everyone loves themselves well or rightly hence Jesus summarises the two commandments of Love into one: Love one another as I have loved you. So that by same love we love God we also love our neighbours using Jesus as the yardstick and not ourselves because we are imperfect. True Love is distinguished by four elements: Spiritual, Intellectual, emotional and physical and that differentiates it from “Satanic love”. 2. The evil one has its own definition of love: a love without the Spiritual and Intellectual elements. A love that emphasises only the emotional and physical elements. A love built on emotions and sensualities! And have subtly replaced the Intellectual element with Intellectual relativism (everything is permissible), and the Spiritual element with Humanism (man should be the interpreter of right or wrong, not God). Hence the unsuspecting person will think it is love! With the understanding of love distorted, Truth is sacrificed on the “altar of tolerance”. Could this be Love? No definitely! It is on this “altar” that ideologies like Feminism and LGBT groups thrive; and from this false representation of love the Q-communities deceive the world with their “gospel of Queerness”. TASK: Search your heart and examine your thoughts: when you say to others I LOVE YOU what do you truly mean? What do you truly feel: Lust, infatuations or Love? You will know this if you truly understand what love is, otherwise you will fall prey to the mistake of the young lady in this writeup.
