This prayer to the Holy Spirit originated with Pope Leo XIII. In 1895 he exhorted all Catholics to devoutly make this Holy Spirit Novena, suggesting a special formula of prayer: “Send forth your Spirit and renew the world.” With this in mind, in 1896 Blessed Elena Guerra, “the Holy Spirit Apostle of modern times”, composed these invocations to ask the Holy Spirit for the grace of a New Pentecost, which renews the face of the earth.
NOVENA PRAYERS TO THE HOLY SPIRIT
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.
O God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, through Christ Our Lord, Amen.
