THE MIRACLE IN YOUR MOUTH: POWER OF WORDS| 27th Sunday| Ordinary Time| Year B

When the looting starts, the shooting starts‘- was a tweet by Donald Trump during the hashtag Black Lives Matter protest in the US in 2020 that generated lots of criticisms and agitations, and was flagged by Twitter as encouraging violence. Even though this expression was first used by Walter E. Headley in 1967, the consequent violent reactions in both instances of its usage goes along way to show how powerful words can be: it could make you or break you!
The power of words cannot be overemphasised: words were used to spark off human existence. The first human institution (marriage) began with words. When the purpose and meaning of words are lost, we are lost, and when words are used negatively, we are destroyed. Many suffer, are in bondage or are limited in progress because they use the wrong words or use words wrongly. Many are ignorant of the miracle in their mouths. If you wish to know more, read slowly…
Genesis 2:18-24
The Lord God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone. I will make him a helpmate.’ So from the soil the Lord God fashioned all the wild beasts and all the birds of heaven. These he brought to the man to see what he would call them; each one was to bear the name the man would give it. The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of heaven and all the wild beasts. But no helpmate suitable for man was found for him. So the Lord God made the man fall into a deep sleep. And while he slept, he took one of his ribs and enclosed it in flesh. The Lord God built the rib he had taken from the man into a woman, and brought her to the man. The man exclaimed:
‘This at last is bone from my bones, and flesh from my flesh! This is to be called woman, for this was taken from man.’
POINTS FOR REFLECTION
1. The Bible is clear when it says whatever He (Adam) calls them (the animals) that became its name! Same also with the woman, when Adam saw her and named her, he conferred on her an Identity, a Purpose or destiny which had direct effects on him and how he would relate with her. 2. The naming caused a Physical and Spiritual connection and created an Institution that will change the life of Adam forever. Unlike the animals whose physical connection to Adam was merely for subsistence, Eve’s role in the life of Adam is to be a helpmate as God intended. This is the physical connection that will determine how Adam shall relate with her- as a companion- with the expression ‘bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh‘. A Spiritual connection was also created as both are no longer two but one body in the Institution of Marriage. See how one act (through the use of words) transformed the life of a man!
3. Today many are ignorant of the miracle in their mouths! Your words become miraculous or blessings when used appropriately, otherwise it becomes curses or setbacks. How do you use words appropriately you ask me? Words are used well when they align to God’s Word and Will. As scripture says: so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it (Isa 55:11).

God’s Word is Truth (Jn 17:17), full of Wisdom (Jas 1,5), Knowledge (1Cor 12, 8) and Power (Ps 29, 4, Heb 1, 3), it is Yes and Amen (2 Cor 1, 20), and God’s Will is the purpose for which something is created (Eph 1: 11-12, Col 1:16). For this reason, with regards to marriage, Jesus corrects the Pharisees and teaches his disciples that divorce is not in the original purpose of marriage. Those who divorce are acting outside God’s plan and purpose (cf Mk 10:5-9).
TASK: Activate the miracle in your mouth now by aligning your purpose in life with the Word of God. Make efforts to study and know God’s Word that you may be equipped to address every situation before you. Remember your purpose in life is discovered when you Know, Love and Serve God.
Pray Psalm 128 now and activate God’s blessing over your life, work, family, wife and children. May you be favoured today, may your work be fruitful, and may your family be blessed in Jesus name. Amen.
