“Father, you just stopped me now from doing something evil with this phone call” was the confession of a lady who revealed to me how she contemplated cursing and destroying the marriage of her ex through a satanic medium. According to her, the man deceived her into relationship with him, not knowing he was planning to get married. To further deceive her, on the day of his wedding he sent her a huge sum of money. She was devastated when friends called her attention to his wedding pictures on social media.
Are you experiencing burnout in your life: a dwindling life of prayer; a dwindling health, financial crisis, large debts, spiritual attacks, a failing relationship or marriage, and you have reached your limits of giving up? If you find yourself in any of these conditions that makes you cry, complain, contemplate suicide or entertain evil thoughts, then this message is for you! Just read slowly…
1 Kings 19:4-8
Elijah went into the wilderness, a day’s journey, and sitting under a furze bush wished he were dead. ‘O Lord,’ he said ‘I have had enough. Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.’ Then he lay down and went to sleep. But an angel touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat.’ He looked round, and there at his head was a scone baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. But the angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat, or the journey will be too long for you.’ So he got up and ate and drank, and strengthened by that food he walked for forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.
POINTS FOR REFLECTION
1. Child of God, no one is too holy or too sinful not experience burnouts or depression. When Elijah had his share he begged God to take his life! When Moses had his own, he asked the Lord if he could die (Num 11:14-15). When Jeremiah had his own he accused God of seducing him! (Jer 20:7-9). If these great prophets known for mighty works and deep relationship with God experienced this and complain, who are we? But the question is: why does God allow such tragedies to befall his servants?
2. God allows his servants to experience ugly situations in order to teach them useful lessons. Rather than rebuking Elijah for exhibiting weakness, the Lord reveals more of Himself by sending an angel to feed him with bread and water thereby teaching him to depend only on God alone for sustenance, strength and comfort.
3. Moments of crises and depression are strong moments of temptations that could make one break faith, make bad decisions, listen to wrong advice or subscribe to satanic alternatives. Elijah overcame depression and stopped complaining as he depended on the bread brought to him by the angel. This life-giving and strength-giving bread is a prefiguration of the Holy Eucharist- the body and blood of Jesus Christ. This is the food Christ introduces to the Jews and to us when he says:
Stop complaining to each other. ‘No one can come to me unless he is drawn by the Father who sent me,and I will raise him up at the last day. (Jn 6:43-44)
TASK: Do you still find reasons to complain after reading this? No amount of worries or complain will solve the problem. You must depend on Jesus in his Word and the Holy Eucharist. Take your up your Bible now and Pray Psalm 30 before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
I pray for you: may all your SORROWS that last for the night be dispelled by the JOY that comes with the morning. Amen
Amen to my morning joys
